A dish based on only 5 ingredients

Considering the small amount of ingredients needed to prepare this dish – french potatoes au gratin – we can consider it an extremely simple dish to prepare. And that’s exactly how it is 😊

Let’s take them one at a time. The ingredients needed to prepare this delicious dish – french potatoes au gratin – are the following:

  1. Boiled and peeled potatoes
  2. Boiled eggs and a raw egg yolk
  3. Salted cheese
  4. Sour Cream
  5. Olive oil

In addition, depending on your preferences, you can add salt, pepper or other spices to this french potatoes au gratin. I did not add salt because the cheese I used was salty enough to provide the amount of salt needed for the whole dish.

Preparing the ingredients

First step for french potatoes au gratin, we start by boiling the potatoes, with the skin on. We start with this step because the skined potatoes need a longer boiling time. I always choose red potatoes, which I boil until I can stick a fork in them, but I think somewhere around 12-15 minutes should be enough once they start to boil.

After the potatoes are boiled, we will boil the eggs, which must be hard-boiled. For this, you need 10-12 minutes of boiling to obtain the hard yolk.

Once these two ingredients are prepared, we can move on to slicing / grating the necessary ingredients.

Thus, using a kitchen grater, we will slightly slice the boiled potatoes, after they have been peeled and completely cooled.

Then, still using a kitchen grater, but the part that shreds food, we will grate the salty cheese. I recommend using telemea or feta cheese.

Next, we will slice the eggs that have been previously boiled, cooled and peeled. I use an egg slicer because it eases my cooking, but you can also slice them with a knife. The slices do not need to be equal.

Next let’s go through the ingredients and the full recipe for french potatoes au gratin.

Equipment

  • 1 Ceramic mold
  • 1 Oven

Ingredients

  • Boiled potatoes peeled and sliced;
  • Boiled eggs peeled and sliced and 1 raw egg yolk;
  • Grated salty cheese;
  • Sour cream;
  • Olive oil;
  • Additional: salt and black pepper.

Instructions

  • We start by boiling the potatoes, with the skin on. We start with this step because the skined potatoes need a longer boiling time. I always choose red potatoes, which I boil until I can stick a fork in them, but I think somewhere around 12-15 minutes should be enough once they start to boil.
  • After the potatoes are boiled, we will boil the eggs, which must be hard-boiled. For this, you need 10-12 minutes of boiling to obtain the hard yolk.
  • Once these two ingredients are prepared, we can move on to slicing / grating the necessary ingredients.
  • Thus, using a kitchen grater, we will slightly slice the boiled potatoes, after they have been peeled and completely cooled.
  • Then, still using a kitchen grater, but the part that shreds food, we will grate the salty cheese. I recommend using telemea or feta cheese.
  • Next, we will slice the eggs that have been previously boiled, cooled and peeled. I use an egg slicer because it eases my cooking, but you can also slice them with a knife. The slices do not need to be equal.
  • Once the above steps have been completed, we can move on to assembling the preparation. For this, we will need a mold resistant to high temperatures. I used a ceramic mold, which I greased with a little olive oil, to avoid sticking the potatoes to the bottom and walls of the ceramic dish.
  • Then, we put the first layer of sliced potatoes, until we cover the entire surface of the bottom of the baking dish. We then continue with the layer of egg slices, over which we will add a generous layer of grated cheese.
  • We can continue this process of arranging the layers as long as the form allows, and as long as we have the necessary ingredients in sufficient quantities.
  • For the last layer we will need approx. 5 mm to the top of the bowl. Before the last layer that will cover the dish, we will spread a little sour cream, which will give the dish a delicious creaminess, and on top of the sour cream we will add another generous layer of grated cheese.
  • For this last layer we will mix a raw egg yolk with a little sour cream, salt and pepper, and then pour this composition over the previously prepared layers.
  • Now is the time to put this dish in the oven, to get a beautifully colored and melted crust over the whole dish.
  • The dish must stay in the oven at a temperature of 200℃ Celsius for about 30-40 minutes, until we get the much-desired crust.
