Even though it is autumn and this can be seen and felt, in the cold air and in the shades of brown and orange that covered the courtyards, gardens, streets and forests, today I present to you a simple and delicious recipe that can be enjoyed throughout the entire year: Grilled Salmon Skewers.
How to make the best salmon skewers?
From my point of view, you can cook salmon skewers in several ways, taking into account the culinary preferences or culinary traditions of each family.
I admit, this was the first time I transformed the salmon fillets into a different dish, with an interesting and attractive presentation, especially for my daughter, Sofia. Until now, her favorite salmon dishes were Honey Mustard Salmon or Creamy Salmon Pasta.
Until now, I avoided preparing any type of skewers, because the meat used for these dishes is, most of the time, too tough, or too bland, for my daughter’s taste. But I thought that salmon can be a wonderful choice for creating appetizing and attractive skewers, because it is a soft meat from a fatty fish.
But, to avoid the possibility of achieving a dry and tasteless salmon, I chose to marinate it a few hours before cooking.
If you will choose to follow my example and to prepare some grilled salmon skewers, you can go for the classic option of alternating the fish with various vegetables that you like, or even with pieces of haloumi cheese. But, at the same time, if you place the pieces of properly seasoned salmon on skewers, without adding vegetables, you can also get salmon kebabs, which I am sure would be very delicious, as well.
After all, this dish is so versatile that it allows you to use a wide range of ingredients, spices and ways to enjoy tender salmon cooked on the grill.
Grilled salmon skewers vs salmon kebabs
Although these two salmon dishes may seem remarkably similar, as both involve fatty fish pieces threaded onto skewers and typically grilled to perfection, if you take a deeper dive into their culinary roots and preparation techniques, you will notice distinct differences, especially when considering the rich Middle Eastern influences that characterize salmon kebabs.
Salmon skewers are a broad category, encompassing a variety of recipes and cooking traditions. These skewers might feature chunks of salmon seasoned with salt, pepper, and perhaps a squeeze of lemon, then grilled. They could also include a marinade or seasoning inspired by any world cuisine, from a simple garlic and herb dressing to a more elaborate Asian-inspired sauce with soy and ginger. The defining characteristic of salmon skewers is their simplicity and the clear, unmasked flavor of the salmon itself.
In contrast, salmon kebabs are a testament to the rich culinary tapestry of the Middle East, distinguished by specific marination and seasoning techniques that have been passed down through generations.
The term ‘kebab’ originates from this region, traditionally referring to meat grilled on a skewer or spit. However, salmon kebabs represent a delightful seafood variation within this tradition.
The journey of creating salmon kebabs starts with the marinade, a crucial step that sets kebabs apart from their skewer counterparts. A traditional Middle Eastern marinade might include yogurt or olive oil, mixed with a symphony of spices such as cumin, coriander, paprika, and za’atar. This marinade doesn’t just flavor the fish; it tenderizes it, ensuring every bite is succulent and rich with the tastes of lands where spice markets buzz beneath the hot sun.
We can conclude that, while both salmon skewers and salmon kebabs offer a delightful dining experience, they cater to different palates and culinary expectations. Salmon skewers appeal to those who prefer their seafood with minimal adornment, allowing the natural flavors of the fish to shine. On the other hand, salmon kebabs are for those who wish to embark on a more adventurous culinary journey, savoring the rich tapestry of flavors, aromas, and textures characteristic of traditional Middle Eastern cuisine.
Which is the best marinade for grilled salmon skewer?
As I presented to you in the article for the Honey Mustard Salmon recipe, there are several types of marinades that go well with salmon.
This time, considering that I was going to place the salmon next to the Haloumi cheese and the red bell pepper, I decided to go for a simple option, namely to make a marinade with butter, lemon and garlic.
I recommend you to choose olive oil, instead of butter, because butter will harden when kept at the refrigerator and then you have to wait a little for it to soften before being able to grill the salmon skewers.
Therefore, I strongly recommend you to make a simple marinade with olive oil, lemon and garlic for the wonderful salmon skewers.
In addition, besides this special texture of the marinated salmon, you will achieve a perfect taste, thanks to the lemon used and the garlic that gives it that extra flavor that grilled salmon skewers need, to be extremely tasty.
As I already told you, this recipe gives you the freedom to add, besides salmon, any ingredient you like. I chose to use Haloumi cheese, because we really like this type of cheese, which is ideally cooked on the grill, together with red bell pepper, which we also like very much.
But you can add onions, cherry tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini or even pineapple, if you like more exotic combinations. At the end of the day, tastes differ and we have the option of creating the most daring combinations of textures and flavors.
Are grilled salmon skewers kids friendly?
Salmon, a soft, flavorful fish, is packed with omega-3 fatty acids, known for supporting brain development and cognitive function in children. These essential fats are very important during the early years, a period marked by rapid brain growth and development. By incorporating salmon into children’s diets, we improve their concentration, memory, and even academic performance.
But the benefits of salmon don’t stop at the brain. This pink fatty fish is an excellent source of high-quality protein, vital for strong, healthy muscles and overall physical growth. It also contains Vitamin D, necessary for bone health, and B vitamins, instrumental in producing energy and forming red blood cells.
Now, let’s turn the spotlight on salmon’s perfect partner on the skewer: vegetables. When children consume vegetables in their meals, they gain a variety of nutrients, fibers, and antioxidants, essential for their immune systems, digestion, and even for maintaining healthy skin and eyesight. The simple act of pairing colorful vegetables with salmon creates a nutrient-dense meal that addresses several dietary requirements.
Serving salmon and vegetables in skewer form not only ensures a balanced diet but also adds an element of fun to mealtime. Children are often more receptive to eating foods presented creatively and interactively. They can even participate in preparing these skewers, choosing their favorite vegetables to thread onto the stick with the salmon. This involvement helps you achieve a special bond with your child, and also assures healthy food choices. In conclusion, salmon and vegetable skewers are not just a tasty meal option but a strategic dietary choice. They support various aspects of children’s development, from brain and bone health to physical growth and immune function. By encouraging a diet that includes such nutrient-rich, enjoyable meals, we’re investing in our children’s health, academic potential, and overall well-being.
