In the next days, I intend to present you some simple recipes, quick to prepare and easy to serve, some of them being suitable for to-go serving, if you intend to go skiing, for example. This is also the case with today’s recipe, which is a perfect idea both for a warm snack, a light dinner and can be served in a lunch box, both for school and for the road.

I am talking about an extremely simple pan-fried cheese pie recipe, which is made using a dough based on yogurt and milk, which is to be filled with a salty cheese cream.

Let’s discover together how simple we can make this healthy and filling hot snack.

How to pan-fry cheese pie without using oil?

A particularity of today’s recipe is that, although it is cooked in a pan, there is no need to use oil. Basically, these cheese pies are similar to Mediterranean Pita recipes, which are flat breads that can be prepared in the oven or in a pan, also without oil.

As in the case of the famous Pita, during cooking, these pan-fried cheese pies will swell, but you don’t have to worry, because once placed at room temperature, the dough will return to its original shape.

So, don’t be afraid to prepare the cheese pie in the pan this time, without adding oil, because the dough will not stick to the cooking surface. Moreover, even if initially, immediately after removing this pie with cheese from the pan, the dough may seem stiff, I guarantee that, as you let it cool, it will soften. In addition, it is important to remember from the beginning that each pan-fried cheese pie will be greased with a piece of butter while it is hot, and this will give it a soft texture and a fabulous taste.

But let’s see how we can prepare these wonderful cheese filled pies.

Is pan-fried cheese pie kid friendly?

From my point of view, these savory cheese pies are an ideal kid friendly warm snack, especially if we analyze the short and simple list of ingredients used.

First of all, since it is a savory snack, this recipe does not contain sugar, which obviously represents a big plus in terms of children’s nutrition.

But let’s take a look at the list of ingredients used and see what benefits they bring to children’s development.

I already told you that our family consumes dairy products daily. I am not a doctor, I cannot express medical opinions, but for us, dairy products represent important ingredients, and we use them more often than meat, for example.

If you are looking for easy homemade recipes based on dairy products, you should try this amazing Baked Mac and Cheese recipe or the sophisticated Cheese and Leek Tart.

 I think that dairy products have important nutritional aspects that can help kids develop healthy, and below you will find the most important benefits for some of the common dairy products, used in this cheese pie recipe.

1. Yogurt: A Probiotic Powerhouse

Yogurt is a fantastic source of probiotics, beneficial bacteria that support gut health, crucial for overall well-being and a strong immune system. A healthy gut is particularly important in children, as it aids in the absorption of nutrients from other foods. Yogurt is also rich in calcium, essential for developing strong bones and teeth, and is a good source of protein, necessary for muscle growth and repair.

2. Milk: The Quintessential Growth Drink

Milk has long been hailed as a staple in children’s diets, and for good reason. It’s packed with calcium, vital for bone health, and vitamin D, which enhances calcium absorption. Milk is also a great source of high-quality protein and provides a range of other essential nutrients, including B vitamins, phosphorus, and potassium, all crucial for a child’s growth and development.

3. Salty Cheese: A Flavorful Nutrient Boost

Salty cheeses, such as feta or halloumi, while higher in sodium, can be beneficial in moderation. They are excellent sources of calcium and phosphorus, two minerals vital for healthy bones and teeth. Cheese is also rich in protein and contains fat, which is important for brain development. The strong flavors of salty cheeses can also help develop a child’s palate, introducing them to a wider range of tastes.

But if you are a sweet cheese lover, then you should make Romanian Sweet Cheese Pies, which work great for breakfast, with a cup of warm milk or for a sweet snack. Also, you can make a super easy dessert with sweet cheese and raising if you follow the Puff Pastry Sweet Cheese and Yogurt recipe, here on the blog.

4. Eggs: A Complete Protein Source

Eggs are nutritional powerhouses, providing a complete source of protein, which means they contain all the essential amino acids needed for growth and development. They are also rich in choline, crucial for brain development and function. The lutein and zeaxanthin in eggs are important for eye health, protecting against light-induced damage. In this particular recipe, we use the egg also for the dough, and for the cheese filling.

In conclusion, I think that incorporating dairy products into a child’s diet offers a multitude of benefits. These foods provide essential nutrients that support physical growth, cognitive development, and overall health. They are versatile and can be included in various meals, making them practical choices for busy families. By choosing these nutrient-dense foods, parents can ensure their children are getting a strong foundation for healthy growth and development. And please take into account that you can find organic dairy products in small local farms, like I do, if you want to make sure that you are using sustainable and ecologic products for you and your family.

  • 100 g Yogurt
  • 2 tsp Baking powder
  • 1 pc Egg
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 400 g Flour

Cheese filling:

  • 200-300 g Cheese
  • 1 pc Egg
  • Optional: salt and black pepper for your taste

Grease:

  • Butter to grease the cheese pies.

Instructions

  • First, we are going to make the cheese pies dough. For this, place the milk, yogurt, baking powder, egg, salt and flour into the mixing bowl and KNEAD – 5 MINUTES. If you don’t use the Thermomix, place all the ingredients for the dough into a large bowl and knead them for 5 minutes;
  • Place the dough on a floured surface and shape the dough into a ball. Cover the dough with a textile kitchen towel and leave it to rest for 20 minutes;
  • Meanwhile, prepare the cheese filling. Simply mix the cheese with the egg well for 1 MIN – SPEED 4. Add salt and black pepper if you consider necessary for your taste. Place the cheese mixture into the refrigerator until you will use it;
    If you love bacon or ham, you can add thin slices of bacon or ham int the cheese composition. In this case, the final result would be a delicious pan-fried bacon cheese pie. Also, you can add different kinds of vegetables if you prefer, like julienned onions or leeks.
  • After the 20 minutes, using a dough cutter, cut the dough into 4 pieces. This way, you will achieve 4 large pan-fried cheese pies. If you want to make smaller ones, cut the dough into 8 pieces;
  • Shape each dough piece into a ball and place them on the floured surface;
  • Now, start cooking the cheese pies. Take the first dough ball, place it on the floured surface and stretch it a little using your fingers;
  • Place the cheese filling in the middle of the dough and cover it with the dough. You will have a ball shape again;
  • Now, using the rolling pin, flatten the dough until you get a shape similar to the pan;
  • Place the pie into the hot pan and cover it with a lit;
  • Cook the cheese pie on both sides for 2-3 minutes, until it gets a brown crust;
  • Once cooked, take out the cheese pie and place it on a plate. Using a butter cube, grease the hot pie;
  • Repeat the process until you finish to cook all the cheese pies;
  • Serve the pan-fried cheese pies warm.
