Common mistakes to avoid when cooking pan sized potato fritter recipe

First of all, it is extremely important to follow the steps of the recipe, and especially the first step, which consists in boiling the potatoes.

You will find a lot of similar recipes, where you are recommended to use raw potatoes. Trust me, it’s not a good idea!

Raw and grated potatoes eliminate a lot of water during the cooking process, whether we are talking about cooking in a pan or in the oven.

Therefore, for an extra 20 minutes, I recommend boiling the potatoes a little before peeling and grating. This will guarantee that you will get perfectly prepared cheesy smashed potatoes recipe!

But, don’t boil the potatoes too much, that way you risk making it impossible to grate them. Check if they are cooked by poking the surface of the potatoes with a fork. If it can pierce the potatoes, it means they are cooked enough.

Then, it is important to respect the proportion of the ingredients used, because:

  • Too much cheese will cause you to get an old fashioned potato pie recipe that will be impossible to handle, because the composition will not bind
  • Too many eggs can result in an omelet, and not a potato pie
  • And finally, please don’t use too much oil. The oil is used exclusively for greasing the pan. This ensures that our potato pie will not stick to the bottom of the pan

Cooking appliance useful for potato fritter recipe

As I have already mentioned several times, all you need to cook this wonderful old fashioned potato pie recipe is a pan with a lid and a vegetable grater, to grate the boiled and peeled potatoes.

Serving and presentation ideas

Make-Ahead and Freezing Tips

As for freezing the Rosti potato pie, I personally don’t think it’s a good idea.

This cheesy smashed potatoes recipe is ideal to be enjoyed warm and fresh, especially since it is an extremely simple dish to cook.

But what you can prepare in advance is the first step, namely boiling the potatoes. So, to ease your cooking, you can boil the potatoes 1-2 days before use. Thus, you can be sure that they are cold when you grate them.

If you don’t eat the whole pan sized potato pie in one day, you can keep it in the fridge and reheat a slice, whenever you want.

Considering that this old fashioned potato pie recipe contains eggs, I recommend not to keep it in the refrigerator for more than 4-5 days.
