Choosing the right ingredients for fish fingers recipe

fish fingers recipe flour

For this fish fingers recipe, the list of necessary ingredients is extremely short and simple, and contains:

  • a boneless white fish, I would recommend Zander fillets
  • freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • salt and black pepper
  • eggs
  • flour
  • breadcrumbs
  • vegetable oil to fry the fish

I don’t recommend you to choose a very fatty fish, because the fish fingers recipe involves frying the fish, so a white, fine fish, such as zander, is perfect for homemade fish fingers.

Unfortunately, most of the fish fingers you find in stores are made using a lower quality fish, such as Pangasius or Hake. This is the main reasons why I recommend you to prepare homemade fish fingers using the best quality ingredients.

Different ways to cook fish fingers recipe

So, once we have determined which is the most suitable fish for fish fingers recipe, it is time to find out how we can cook this delicious dish.

Today I chose to present you the simplest version, which is super easy and doesn’t require much effort – pan fried fish fingers.

This means that, using a decent amount of vegetable oil – I like sunflower oil – I will fry the fish fillets covered with a mixture made of egg wash with flour and then with breadcrumbs, using a large pan. Homemade fish fingers prepared this way need a maximum of 3-4 minutes of frying on each side.

Another way to cook breaded fish nuggets is deep frying. But this requires the use of a large amount of oil, in which you practically completely soak the breaded fish nuggets. Deep fry can be done in a deep fry pan skillet or in a electric deep fryer.

Finally, there is also the option of cooking breaded fish nuggets in the air fryer. This way, you will be able to use the smallest amount of oil, but there is a risk that these homemade fish fingers will be slightly dry inside, because the fish does not have fat like turkey or chicken, for example.

So, you have the freedom to choose which cooking method suits you best for these delicious breaded fish nuggets.

Serving and presentation

Obviously, these delicious homemade fish fingers should be enjoyed warm. I really like to prepare a garlic sauce with yogurt for breaded fish nuggets, but ketchup also fits perfectly.

Also, if you want to prepare a side dish for this fish fingers recipe, I recommend Potato Salad, because it is the perfect match, especially if you organize backyard cooking.

Preservation tips

As with many other recipes, it is possible to cook a larger quantity than what you will consume at one meal. In this case, I recommend that you keep these homemade fish fingers in the refrigerator, stored in casseroles with lid, for a maximum of 3-4 days.

They can be enjoyed cold, but they will definitely have a different texture than on the day of cooking, or they can be reheated in the microwave for 2-3 minutes, but even in this case the texture will be different from the original one.
